In 1889,  the Central Islip Psychiatric Center opened and by 1955, it housed over 10,000 patients. It closed in 1996. Starting in the mid-1990s, Central Islip began a resurgence, with new housing developments and government complexes. A new federal courthouse complex opened, claiming to be the second largest in the country, on part of the site of the former Central Islip Psychiatric Center’s campus. In 2000, the Long Island Ducks baseball stadium opened.
