 Greenport, NY 11944 is an incorporated village in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County on the north fork of Long Island.
Barnabus Horton led a small band of adventurers who crossed the Atlantic from England in 1640 and set foot in Southold, the township that now includes the Village of Greenport. Before the Revolutionary War, the village was referred to as Winter Harbor, and later Stirling. A busy wharf saw ships bound for South America and the Caribbean load and discharge their cargo during the Revolutionary War era. The name of the village was changed again to Greenhill and finally renamed Greenport when the village was incorporated as part of Southold Town in 1838.
Greenport today: A deep-water harbor in the village center includes a 60-slip marina for transient crafts. Strolling the sidewalks, you ’ll find many unique shops, ice creams shops, museums, a restored Art Deco movie theater and restored old Jail house, and an antique carousel. Greenport’s restaurants offer a delicious variety from picnic fare to gourmet dining, complete with local lobsters, oysters, striped bass, sea bass, and fluke paired with locally grown vegetables and Long Island wines. The Maritime Festival in September is very popular.
