East Meadow, NY 11554 is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead on Long Island in Nassau County.
In 1655, two Hempstead Town surveyors reported that the east meadow would be suitable for grazing. The area quickly became a grazing area for cattle and later, in the 1700s, for sheep. The sheep of the East Meadow, NY area provided the country with more than 50% of the United States wool needs at that time. During the American Revolutionary War, East Meadow was occupied by British forces after they discovered the large amounts of livestock herded there, and remained under their control until the end of the war.
A 930 acre oasis of open space in the heart of Nassau County, Eisenhower Park is one of the largest public spaces in the New York metropolitan area larger, in fact, than Central Park.
The park offers a full range of athletic and family activities, including one of the finest swimming facilities in the U.S., a major golf facility, dozens of athletic fields and courts, picnic areas, summertime entertainment, playgrounds, fitness trails and more. During the Depression, the owners were unable to pay taxes and the property was taken over by the county. Subsequently, the county acquired additional land in the area. In 1944, Salsibury Park was established as part of then County Executive J. Russell Spragues vision to create a park that one day will be to Nassau County what Central Park is to New York City. The park was officially dedicated in October of 1949. The park was rededicated in 1969 as the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Park at a ceremony attended by the 34th Presidents grandson, Dwight D. Eisenhower II, and his wife, Julie Nixon Eisenhower.
Safety Town, at Eisenhower Park, is a miniature town operated by the Nassau County Police Department that teaches children about traffic safety. An actual miniature town built to 1/3 scale, includes paved streets, two intersections with traffic signals, two tunnels, an overpass, a simulated railroad crossing and 21 buildings. It allows the Traffic Safety Unit to teach traffic and bicycle safety to children in grade school under controlled conditions.
Children are taught about the rules governing bikers and pedestrians sharing the road with motorists. Attendants go through Safety Town as pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists in electric-powered miniature cars.
